Pickles are not a great food for dogs, they are harmful in large quantities.

Pickles contain large amounts of sodium which, for several reasons, can pose a health risk to your dog. The high sodium content and ingredients such as onions, vinegar and garlic that are used in pickles can have catastrophic effects on the health of your dogs.

If you do give your dog pickles, some are made with peppercorns and other spices, so you need to be careful to make sure they don't toxic ingredients. You can pickle homemade dill and skip the garlic, but it still has the high sodium content, which is bad for your dog.

If the pickles do not have salt, garlic, and were not cooked with onions it is probably safe to give a piece of it to your dog as a treat. Feed occasionally a few slices cut into small pieces, pickles should be a very small part of your dog's diet.

For the reasons mentioned above, you should not let your dog have any of the pickle juice as it may contain high sodium, sugar and vinegar.

Dogs with heart disease, high blood pressure and other sodium-related conditions should avoid pickles altogether.
